| ウィリアム・B・イェイツの詩集「塔」から「男の生涯11 コロノスのオイディプスより」From 'Oedipus at Colonus（壺齋散人） 神の与え賜うた寿命に甘んじ それ以上を求めるな 若い頃の喜びにこだわるのは止めよ 旅に疲れた老人よ ほかに求めるものがなくなれば ひとは死を求めるようできているのだ 大切にしている若い頃の思い出のなかにも 死や絶望や肉親との離別など いやなことがらはいくらでもある 年老いた乞食や呪われた子どもなら良く知っていることだ 賑やかな通りには踊り子たちが笑いながら群がり たいまつの光と合唱の声に送られて 花嫁が寝屋に向かう だがその彼女にいつ死がおとずれるか 誰にもわからない 生まれなかったことがベストだと古の詩人はいう そもそもこの世に生まれて生きていくことに 何の意味があるだろうか せめてこの世に別れを告げ死んでいくがいいのだ コロノスのオイディプスはソフォクレス作のギリシャ悲劇である。年老いたオイディプスが娘のアンティゴネーに手を引かれコロノスの森にやってきて、そこを死に場所に選ぶ。 人生の終末を迎えたオイディプスは、生きることの意味を、改めて自分自身に問う。そして、そもそも生まれなかったことがよかったのだという結論に達する。 |

From 'Oedipus at Colonus Endure what life God gives and ask no longer span; Cease to remember the delights of youth, travel-wearied aged man; Delight becomes death-longing if all longing else be vain. Even from that delight memory treasures so, Death, despair, division of families, all entanglements of mankind grow, As that old wandering beggar and these God-hated children know. In the long echoing street the laughing dancers throng, The bride is carried to the bridegroom's chamber through torchlight and tumultuous song; I celebrate the silent kiss that ends short life or long. Never to have lived is best, ancient writers say; Never to have drawn the breath of life, never to have looked into the eye of day; The second best's a gay goodnight and quickly turn |
