ウィリアム・ワーズワースの詩「麦を刈る乙女」The Solitary Reaper を読む。（壺齋散人訳）

　　見てごらん　畑の中に
　　一人の乙女が働いている
　　麦を刈りながら　歌っている
　　しばし足をとめて聞き入れば
　　麦を刈り　束ねながら
　　物憂げな歌を歌っている
　　その歌声はあふれるように
　　深い谷間に響き渡る
　
　　ナイチンゲールさえ　こんなにも
　　心に響く歌は　歌えない
　　アラビアの砂漠を行く隊商の
　　疲れた心にも染み入る声
　　春を告げるカッコウの声も
　　こんなにも心には響かない
　　ヘブリディーズの最果ての海の
　　沈黙をも破る豊かな歌声

　　彼女が歌うのはどんな歌か
　　遠い昔の悲しい出来事
　　過ぎ去った日々の戦いについての
　　悲しい調べの歌なのだろうか
　　身の回りの出来事についての
　　ありふれた物語なのか
　　悲しみ　別れ　痛みなど
　　人間にせまる試練の歌か

　　調べもそらに　乙女は歌う
　　まるで終わりのない歌のように
　　歌いながら　働き続ける
　　麦刈る鎌にかがみこみながら
　　身動きもせず　私は聞き入り
　　そして丘を登っていったが
　　歌声は心にしみついて
　　いつまでも響き渡るのだった

「麦を刈る乙女」は1803年スコットランドに遊んだ際に作ったものとされる。詩の中で Highland Lass とあるのは、スコットランド娘をさす言葉だ。

麦刈りの労働にいそしむ娘の姿と彼女が歌う物語に、自然の中にたくましく生きる人間を感じ、詩心をそそられたのであろう。

　　BEHOLD her, single in the field,
　　　Yon solitary Highland Lass!
　　Reaping and singing by herself;
　　　Stop here, or gently pass!
　　Alone she cuts and binds the grain,
　　And sings a melancholy strain;
　　O listen! for the Vale profound
　　Is overflowing with the sound.

　　No Nightingale did ever chaunt
　　　More welcome notes to weary bands
　　Of travellers in some shady haunt,
　　　Among Arabian sands:
　　A voice so thrilling ne'er was heard
　　In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird,
　　Breaking the silence of the seas
　　Among the farthest Hebrides.

　　Will no one tell me what she sings??
　　　Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
　　For old, unhappy, far-off things,
　　　And battles long ago:
　　Or is it some more humble lay,
　　Familiar matter of to-day?
　　Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,
　　That has been, and may be again?

　　Whate'er the theme, the Maiden sang
　　　As if her song could have no ending;
　　I saw her singing at her work,
　　　And o'er the sickle bending;?
　　I listen'd, motionless and still;
　　And, as I mounted up the hill,
　　The music in my heart I bore,
　　Long after it was heard no more.
