ウィリアム・ワーズワースの詩「浮世のこと」　The world is too much with usを読む。（壺齋散人訳）

　　我らの頭は浮世のことでいっぱいだ
　　朝から晩まで　金儲けのことばかり
　　目の前の自然を見ようともしない
　　そんな余裕は持てないとばかりに

　　海は月を抱いて輝き
　　始終うなり声をあげる風も
　　いまは眠れる花のように静かなのに
　　そんな眺めも眼中にない

　　こんなことならいっそ自分は
　　異教徒にでもなったがましだ
　　そうすれば草原にひとりたたずみ
　　自然をすなおに見れるだろう
　　海から立ち上がるプロテウスを見たり
　　トリトンのほら貝も聞こえてこよう

「浮世のこと」は1806年の作品。金儲けしか頭になく、自然の喜びに鈍感な同時代人たちを風刺したもの。前掲の「ロンドン」と共通するところがある。

プロテウスはギリシャ神話の海神、トリトンは半人半魚の神で手にほら貝を持つ。いっそ異教徒になりたいとは、ギリシャになって神話の世界に生きたいという意味か。

　　THE World is too much with us; late and soon,
　　　　Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
　　　　Little we see in Nature that is ours;
　　We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
　　This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
　　　　The winds that will be howling at all hours
　　　　And are up-gather'd now like sleeping flowers,
　　For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
　　It moves us not.?Great God! I'd rather be
　　　　A pagan suckled in a creed outworn,?
　　So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
　　　　Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
　　Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
　　　　Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.
