シェイクスピアのソネット116　 Let me not to the marriage

　　真実の心と心が結ばれるにあたり
　　障害を介入させないようにしよう
　　事情が変われば自分も変わり　相手次第で心を移す
　　そんな愛は愛とはいえない

　　愛とは不動の目印のようなもの
　　嵐にあっても　決して揺るがない
　　愛とは船を導く星のようなもの
　　高さは測られようと　その力は無際限

　　愛は時の道化ではない　愛する人の唇や頬が
　　時の大鎌によって刈り取られようとも
　　愛は束の間の時の中で変わることなく
　　最後の審判の日まで貫くものだ
　　　　もしこれが間違いで　私も間違っているなら
　　　　こんなことは書かないし　愛することもしないだろう

青年を歌った一連のソネットの終盤近くになって、シェイクスピアはこのソネットを始めとして、愛の永遠性について改めて歌っている。

それは心がときめくような愛に始まって、互いの心変わりや裏切りを経て、ゆるぎないものへと高まっていく。そんな愛の讃歌としてこのソネットは受け取られ、シェイクスピアのソネット集の中でもとりわけ重要視されてきた。

　　Let me not to the marriage of true minds
　　Admit impediments. Love is not love
　　Which alters when it alteration finds,
　　Or bends with the remover to remove:

　　O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
　　That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
　　It is the star to every wandering bark,
　　Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.

　　Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
　　Within his bending sickle's compass come:
　　Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
　　But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

to the marriage of true minds：青年との愛が肉体的なものではなく、プラトニックな愛であったことを強調している、the remover：one who moves、ever-fixed mark：sea mark、wandering bark：漂流する船、Whose worth's：星の価値、although his height be taken：星の高さは測ることはできなくとも、I never writ：I have never written anything
