シェイクスピアのソネット55　Not marble

　　王侯たちの大理石の像も金ぴかのモニュメントも
　　この力強い詩より長く生き残ることはない
　　君はこれらの詩句のなかで光り輝く
　　時の流れに汚れた石像などよりもっと明るく

　　破壊的な戦いが彫像を押し倒し
　　石工の傑作を根こそぎにするとも
　　君の思い出の生き生きとした記録は
　　軍神の剣も戦火でさえも焼き尽くすことはない

　　死に抗し　忘却の敵意にひるむことなく
　　君は歩み続けるだろう　
　　そして君のすばらしさは後世の人の目にとまり
　　この世の終わりまで生き続けるだろう
　　　　そうだ　最後の審判の時がくるまで
　　　　君は詩の中に生き続け　恋人たちの目に住まうのだ

この詩は、言葉、とくに詩の持つ永遠性を高らかに歌い上げたものとして、シェイクスピアのソネットの中でも、とりわけ有名なもののひとつだ。

大理石の像も金のモニュメントもいつかは滅びるかもしれない。しかし言葉は人類が生きている限りは永遠に生き続ける。だから言葉によって永遠性を付与されたものは、人間の記憶の中にいつまでも生き続ける。永遠とはこのようなことなのだと、シェイクスピアは歌っている。

　　Not marble, nor the gilded monuments
　　Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme;
　　But you shall shine more bright in these contents
　　Than unswept stone besmear'd with sluttish time.

　　When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
　　And broils root out the work of masonry,
　　Nor Mars his sword nor war's quick fire shall burn
　　The living record of your memory.

　　'Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity
　　Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
　　Even in the eyes of all posterity
　　That wear this world out to the ending doom.
　　　　So, till the judgment that yourself arise,
　　　　You live in this, and dwell in lover's eyes.
