Parable of the Old Men and the Young（壺齋散人訳）

　　アブラハムは立ち上がり　薪を持ってでかけた
　　生贄のための火と　ナイフを携えて
　　アブラハムが息子たちとともに腰を落ち着けたとき
　　長男のイサクが父に向かって言った
　　生贄のための火も鉄も準備ができた
　　でも神にささげる羊はどこに？
　　アブラハムは息子を縄と紐で縛り上げると
　　地面に塹壕を掘り　柵をめぐらし
　　ナイフで息子の体を切り裂こうとした
　　すると空中に天使があらわれアブラハムにいった
　　子どもに手をかけるのではない
　　子どもを殺してはならぬ
　　見よ　角を縛られた一頭の羊を
　　この羊を息子の代わりに生贄にせよと
　　だがアブラハムは息子の体を切り裂いたのだった

聖書に書かれている「アブラハムとイサク」の話は、キルケゴールも取り上げている。キルケゴールはそれを、神の意思の苛烈さを表すものとして理解したのだった。

オーウェンは、神の意思が戦争をもたらしているのだと観念して、この寓話を取り上げたのかもしれない。

Parable of the Old Men and the Young

So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with him, and a knife.
And as they sojourned both of them together,
Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father,
Behold the preparations, fire and iron,
But where the lamb for this burnt-offering?
Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps,
And builded parapets and trenches there,
And stretched forth the knife to slay his son.
When lo! an angel called him out of heaven,
Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad,
Neither do anything to him. Behold,
A ram caught in a thicket by its horns;
Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him.
But the old man would not so, but slew his son. . . .
