聖なるソネット10（死よ驕るなかれ）：ジョン・ダンの詩の和訳

　　死よ驕るなかれ　汝を力強く恐ろしいと
　　いう者もいるが　決してそうではない
　　汝が倒したと考える者は　死にはしない
　　おろかな死よ　汝は私を殺せないのだ

　　汝の似姿たる休息と安眠からは
　　より大きな喜びが生まれ出てくる
　　最も優れたものが死を急ぐのは
　　骨に安らぎを与え　魂を開放させるため

　　汝は運命や偶然、王侯や絶望した人の奴隷
　　汝は牢獄、戦争、疫病の隣人
　　芥子粒や呪文も同じように人を眠らせる
　　汝の一撃よりもよく　だから威張ることはない
　　束の間の眠りの後我々は永遠に甦る
　　そこにはもはや死はない　死よ　汝こそが死ぬのだ

ジョン・ダンの作品の中でもっとも有名なもののひとつ。肉体に執着したものにとっては死は恐ろしいものだが、魂にとっては何者でもない。なぜなら魂は肉体の滅びの後永遠に甦るからだ。

この詩にはキリスト教の霊魂観と救済の思想が端的に盛られている。

　　Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
　　Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so ;
　　For those, whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow,
　　Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.

　　From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
　　Much pleasure, then from thee much more must flow,
　　And soonest our best men with thee do go,
　　Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.

　　Thou'rt slave to Fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
　　And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
　　And poppy, or charms can make us sleep as well,
　　And better than thy stroke ; why swell'st thou then ?
　　One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
　　And Death shall be no more ; Death, thou shalt die.
