シェイクスピアのソネット81　 Or I shall live

　　私が生き残って君の墓碑銘を書くことになろうと
　　私が墓の中で朽ち果てて君が生き残ろうと
　　これからは死でさえも君の記憶を消せないだろう
　　たとえこの私が死んでこの世から消え去ったとしても

　　これからは君の名は永遠に生き続ける
　　たとえ私が死んで世間から忘れられても
　　私のためには大地が粗末な墓を用意してくれるが
　　君は人々の目の中に葬られるのだ

　　私の詩こそ君の記念碑なのだ
　　まだ生まれていない人々の目にもそれは読まれ
　　未来の人の舌が君のことをしゃべるだろう
　　たとえ今生きている人々が死に絶えた後でも
　　　　君はなおも生き続ける　それが私のペンの威力だ
　　　　人間の息が通うところ　人々の口の中で生き続ける

この詩では冒頭に shall が出てくるので、あの有名な Shall I compare を思い出させる。実際この詩にはShall が多用されており、7回も出てくる。ソネット集全体で60回しかないにかかわらずである。

このことからわかるとおり、この詩は未来を見通した詩であり、eyes やtonguesとはこの詩を読んでいる未来の人たる我々読者自身なのだ。

　　Or you survive when I in earth am rotten;
　　From hence your memory death cannot take,
