結末 The End

ウィルフレッド・オーウェン Wilfred Owen の詩「結末」The End（壺齋散人訳）

　　東の空から落雷が直撃し
　　暗雲がもうもうと垂れ込めて　部隊は壊滅した
　　時が響きをたてて荒れ狂ったあとに
　　退却線は吹き飛ばされた

　　生命がこれらの死体に再び宿ることはないのか
　　死を帳消しにし　涙を乾かすことはできないのか？
　　干からびてしまった血管を生き生きとした流れにかえ
　　不滅の命の水で満たすことはできないのか？

　　白髪の時の精に尋ねると　できぬという
　　“我が頭は雪の重みで垂れ下がっておる”と
　　大地の女神に尋ねても　できぬという
　　“我が心は痛みに沈む　死んだものはもう生き返らない
　　我が古傷は決して癒されることがなく
　　我が海のような涙は決して乾くことがない“と

オーウェンの詩集の最後に置かれたこの詩には、結末（終わり）という題が冠せられている。それは詩集の終わりを意味するとともに、命の終わりを意味している。

命の終わりとは何なのか。それをこの詩は、痛恨の気持ちを込めて歌っている。

The End

After the blast of lightning from the east,
The flourish of loud clouds, the Chariot throne,
After the drums of time have rolled and ceased
And from the bronze west long retreat is blown,

Shall Life renew these bodies? Of a truth
All death will he annul, all tears assuage?
Or fill these void veins full again with youth
And wash with an immortal water age?

When I do ask white Age, he saith not so,?
"My head hangs weighed with snow."
And when I hearken to the Earth she saith
“My fiery heart sinks aching. It is death.
Mine ancient scars shall not be glorified
Nor my titanic tears the seas be dried."
