| ウィリアム・B・イェイツの「最後の詩集」から「まぼろし」The Apparitions（壺齋散人訳） 馬鹿にされてもかまわないから わたしはまぼろしについて語った 普通のひとにどう受け取られるか そんなことはどうでもよかった 大胆であれ 狡猾であれ 世人の目など取るにも足りない 十五もの幻をわたしは見たんだ 一番すごいのはハンガーに引っかかったコートだった わたしの習い性となっている 孤独ほど心地よいものはない 夜通し独りで過ごすのは快適だ そばに友人がいたとしても わたしを邪魔するようなことはしない たとえわたしを不可解だと思っても 十五もの幻をわたしは見たんだ 一番すごいのはハンガーに引っかかったコートだった 男は年をとるにつれ 喜びは日に日に深くなり ついには空虚な心が満たされる だが年寄りには力が必要だ 神秘と恐怖の種をまく あの膨張する夜を乗り切るためには 十五もの幻をわたしは見たんだ 一番すごいのはハンガーに引っかかったコートだった 老人の幻想をテーマにした詩だ。老人が見た幻のイメージが、リフレーンとして繰り返される。 |

The Apparitions Because there is safety in derision I talked about an apparition, I took no trouble to convince, Or seem plausible to a man of sense. Distrustful of that popular eye Whether it be bold or sly. Fifteen apparitions have I seen; The worst a coat upon a coat-hanger. I have found nothing half so good As my long-planned half solitude, Where I can sit up half the night With some friend that has the wit Not to allow his looks to tell When I am unintelligible.
