再生 The Second Coming：イェイツの詩を読む |
| ウィリアム・B・イェイツの詩「再生」The Second Coming（壺齋散人訳） らせん状に旋回して飛んでいく鷹に 鷹匠の声が届かないように 世界は秩序を喪失して 混沌たる状態に陥っている いたるところどす黒い波が押し寄せ ささやかな生活まで飲み込んでしまう 不安ばかりがつのるばかり 未来への希望は失われた たしかに啓示は迫ってはいる たしかに再生の兆しはある この再生という言葉を聞くやいなや 世界精神の巨大なイメージが わたしの目をくらます どこか砂漠の砂の中から スフィンクスのような怪物が目を怒らせ ゆったりと立ち上がると その周りを怒れる鳥たちが旋回する 世界は再び影に覆われ 2000年の安き眠りは破られて 揺籠を悪夢が襲う だがその中から新たな猛獣が生まれ出て ベスレヘムをいつくしむだろう この詩は1919年に書かれたが、イェイツには珍しく政治にコミットする内容が盛られている。 この時期ヨーロッパは第一次大戦の後遺症に苦しんでいた。なかでもイェイツを悩ませたのは共産主義が勝利したソ連の現状だった。イェイツは自分が生きる西欧にもその勢力が押し寄せることを危惧していたふしある。 この詩の題名 The Second Coming は、キリストの復活を指している。キリストは復活することで人々に信仰の根拠を与えた。イェイツは新たな救世主の出現を期待することで、世界の存続に根拠を見出したかった。 |

Yeats URNING and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again; but now I know That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born? |
