| エドガー・ポーの詩「夢の又夢」A Dream within a Dream（壺齋散人訳） あなたの額にわたしのキスを受けて欲しい そして あなたと別れるにあたり 是非ひとこと言わせて欲しい たしかにあなたのいうとおり わたしの人生は夢だった けれど 夜の闇へ 白昼の彼方へ 幻のように あるいは無となって 希望が消え去ったからといって 意味のない夢だったとはいえない わたしたちが見たり感じたりしてることも 所詮は夢のまた夢なのだから うねり声をたてつつ逆巻く 波のしぶきを身に浴びながら わたしは黄金の砂を手に持って ひとり立ち尽くしている それらは指の合間からすり抜けて ひとつも手には残らない わたしは悲しさで泣きたくなる おお神よ ひとつぶだにも 握り締めていることはできないのか おお神よ ひとつぶだにも 波の無慈悲から守れないのか わたしたちが見たり感じたりしていることは 所詮は夢のまた夢なのか 死の年に書かれたこの詩は、自分の一生を総括したような内容だ。詩の中で呼びかけている女性が誰であるか、それはわからない。もしかしたら死んだヴァージニアかもしれないし、ポーの晩年のよき理解者だったホイットマン夫人かもしれないし、最晩年にいたって再びめぐり合った初恋の人エルミラかもしれない。 |
