| エドガー・ポーの詩「ヴァレンタイン」A Valentine（壺齋散人訳） 彼女のためにこの詩は書かれた レダのように賢い彼女の目なら ここに自分の名前を探しあてるだろう 凡庸な読者の目には隠されたところから 行間を丹念に探すのだ そこに護札のような宝物が潜んでいる それを探し出して胸に架けるのだ 些細な点まで見逃してはならぬ でなければ決して報われることはない とはいえゴルディアの結び目があるわけでもない その結び目は剣でなければ解けないが これは仕組みを見抜けば解けるのだ 目を光らせて覗き込んでいる紙片の上に ある言葉が書かれているのだ それは詩人によってささやかれる言葉 詩人自身の名前でもある言葉 その文字列はみっつからなる ピント・メンデズ・フェルナンデスのように それは真実と同義の言葉だ 謎ではないが 謎を解くように心して解け Enigma 同様、この詩のなかには、人名が隠されている。一列目の一番目の文字、二列目の二番目の文字、三列目の三番目の文字といった具合に、法則にのっとって文字を取り出して並べると、Frances Sargent Osgood という人名が現れるのだ。 この名前はポーがひそかに愛した女性の名らしい。彼女は他の男の妻であったが、ポーにひそかに心を寄せていたようだ。その女性に対して、ポーはあからさまに振舞うことができなかったかわりに、このような不思議な手紙を贈って、心を慰めていたとも考えられる。 詩の題名は、ヴァレンタインの日に贈るという意味だろうか。 |
