聖なるソネット4（黒く汚れた心よ）：ジョン・ダンの詩の和訳

　　おお　私の黒く汚れた心よ　いまやお前は召されるのだ
　　死の魁にして主人たる病にせかされて
　　お前は旅先で裏切を犯した罪によって
　　逃げてきた祖国に戻れない巡礼のようだ

　　あるいは死刑を宣告されるまでは
　　監獄から逃げ出したいと思いながら
　　いざ宣告を受けて刑場に引き出されるや
　　まだ監獄に入っていたいと願う罪人のようだ

　　悔い改めるならば許されることもあろう
　　だが誰がお前にそのきっかけを作ってくれよう
　　いっそ聖なる悲しみで真っ黒になるがよい
　　罪で染まったように恥で真っ赤になるがよい
　　強烈なキリストの血で洗ってもらえ
　　赤い色をしているのに赤い心臓を白く染める血で

いよいよ死に臨んだ人間の絶望を歌ったこの詩には、救いの可能性が述べられていない。神に対する感情も中途半端なものである。

　　O, my black soul, now thou art summoned
　　By sickness, Death's herald and champion ;
　　Thou'rt like a pilgrim, which abroad hath done
　　Treason, and durst not turn to whence he's fled ;

　　Or like a thief, which till death's doom be read,
　　Wisheth himself deliver'd from prison,
　　But damn'd and haled to execution,
　　Wisheth that still he might be imprisoned.

　　Yet grace, if thou repent, thou canst not lack ;
　　But who shall give thee that grace to begin ?
　　O, make thyself with holy mourning black,
　　And red with blushing, as thou art with sin ;
　　Or wash thee in Christ's blood, which hath this might,
　　That being red, it dyes red souls to white.
