ランプが砕けると：パーシー・シェリー

　　ランプが砕けると
　　明かりは塵にまみれて消える
　　雲が飛び散ると
　　虹はきれいな形を失う
　　リュートが毀れると
　　美しい音色は戻らない
　　愛が言葉でいわれると
　　中身はすぐに忘れ去られる

　　音楽や光の輝きが
　　ランプやリュートなしではありえぬように
　　心が響かないでは
　　魂のこだまは歌とならない
　　せいぜい廃墟を吹き渡る風のような
　　悲しい挽歌となるだけか
　　水夫を弔う鐘のような
　　せつない波の音になるだけ

　　心と心が結ばれると
　　強いものから愛が消える
　　弱いものは一人残され
　　失ったものに耐えねばならぬ
　　おお愛よ！おまえは
　　この世のはかないことを嘆くが
　　なぜ弱いものを選んで
　　その人の心をもてあそぶのだ？

　　嵐がカラスを揺り飛ばすように
　　熱情が人を揺さぶる
　　分別も役には立たない
　　冬空のくすんだ太陽のように
　　愛するものの　よって立つべき
　　あらゆるものが崩れ落ち
　　人は裸で放り出される
　　木の葉を散らす冷たい風が来るというのに

1821年、シェリーの生前最後の時期に属する作品。愛が弱いものをとらえたとき、その人にとって如何に過酷なものに変わりうるか、言い換えれば、報われぬ愛のむごさについて、歌ったものである。

シェリーには、指示代名詞を乱用する傾向があり、それも事前の説明なく、いきなりそれらを用いる場合が多い。この詩でも、it やtheeといった指示代名詞が果たして何を意味しているのか、慎重に読み取る必要がある。

　　When the lamp is shattered
　　The light in the dust lies dead -
　　When the cloud is scattered,
　　The rainbow's glory is shed.
　　When the lute is broken,
　　Sweet tones are remembered not;
　　When the lips have spoken,
　　Loved accents are soon forgot.

　　As music and splendour
　　Survive not the lamp and the lute,
　　The heart's echoes render
　　No song when the spirit is mute -
　　No song but sad dirges,
　　Like the wind through a ruined cell,
　　Or the mournful surges
　　That ring the dead seaman's knell.

　　When hearts have once mingled,
　　Love first leaves the well-built nest;
　　The weak one is singled
　　To endure what it once possessed.
　　O Love! who bewailest
　　The frailty of all things here,
　　Why choose you the frailest
　　For your cradle, your home, and your bier?

　　Its passions will rock thee,
　　As the storms rock the ravens on high;
